“Gullah” Jack Pritchard was born in the late 18th century in what was believed to be Zanzibar in eastern Africa. He was an important actor in Denmark Vesey’s failed rebellion in Charleston, South Carolina. He helped to recruit fellow enslaved in and around Charleston because of his religious background and gave them charms to protect them from their white enslavers. He was also an enslaved dock worker in Charleston so he got to meet many different people in his line of work. Finally, he was captured with Denmark Vesey in Charleston and hung along with the rest of his Co-Conspirators.
